The SodaFabriek is a building located in Schiedam. This building dates from around the year 1800 and has been empty since 1975. Restauro architecten, my external partner, buys it in 2012 for the price of 1€ from the City of Schiedam, because the agency sees real potential in this place.
The SodaFabriek is a monument full of history. My wish is to relate the renovation of the SodaFabriek to its own history. Silos, small wagons, and other machineries are still present. Therefore I use the soda production system as a metaphor. This production system illustrates the importance of collaborative work. I keep the spirit of the SodaFabriek by transforming it into a collective. Its fundamentals are collaboration and sustainability.
Regarding my work of branding, I decided to rename this project as the Soda Collective. I defined the main goals of the Soda Collective by defining its four main brand values: collaboration, creativity, sustainability and progress. These values provide the guidelines for the design of the Soda Collective.
The third important aspect of this project is the balance between industrial and new. Balancing both industrial and new design led me to create a genuine experience respectful to the history of the building.
